The YMCA of Canberra Sailing Club (YMCASC) is a family orientated sailing club situated on Yarralumla Bay, Lake Burley Griffin in Canberra. The club runs sailing races for dinghies, catamarans and trailable yachts as well as training courses for children and adults. The YMCASC is an ideal place for the whole family to sail, with excellent facilities and an active membership. We are also the only YMCA Sailing Club in the world !
The Sailing Club is run by a team of enthusiastic volunteers who are dedicated to the sport of sailing and also to the Club. Anyone can join the club, whether you are interested in learning the skills of sailing, or enjoy the experience and exhilaration of racing, or wish to be part of the power boat rescue crew the YMCASC is a great place to sail. The Club caters for sailors with disabilities using specially designed Access dinghies.
Facilities at the club include a fleet of training boats (which can be hired by members), boat shed space, clubrooms, change facilities and a galley catering to all tastes for the use of members and guests.
Training courses are held throughout the sailing season, mostly for beginners with no prior sailing experience. Graduates of the training courses are encouraged to join the Club and participate in sailing activities. The Twilight “learn-to-race” series on Tuesday evenings is a great starting point for new sailors. A major focus of club racing is the Saturday afternoon competition for more experienced sailors, in which there is a strong turnout in a variety of classes. Club members have been very successful over the years with National Champions in Cherubs, Herons, 505s, Seaflys, 420s, Spirals, Stingrays, Mosquitos, Paper Tigers, Cobras, Maricats, Windrushes, 2.4mR and other Classes.
A Brief History
The YMCASC was first established in 1963, club activities initially centered on Lake George until the filling of Lake Burley Griffin in 1964. The clubhouse was built in ten months by volunteer labour in time for the Heron Nationals that commenced on 31 December 1966. The Boat shed was constructed eleven years later in 1977.
